Paul J. Fitzgerald, Psy.D.
Director of Master’s Counseling Training

Teaching at Adler is the natural culmination of my association with the School and with Adlerian thought. Since my undergraduate days, the tradition of Adlerian psychology was right for me. I've been excited and pleased to find a still-thriving Adlerian tradition and commitment here at the School. This philosophy incorporates social interest as a motivating force of human behavior, making psychology and counseling more than professions; it defines them as a contribution to the betterment of the human community.

My teaching style is influenced by years of leading employee seminars and training. I like to connect with all students—the best classroom experience is one in which everyone is a participant. Information and ideas need to be transformed and integrated into the students’ thinking in order to be useful. Memorable classes lead to “aha” moments. There are always current examples of what we are studying, and it’s my job to bring these to the classroom. I use humor when it will help make a point and strengthen meaning.
