Raymond E. Crossman, President of the Adler School of Professional Psychology, is among the higher education leaders who have united as College Presidents for Gun Safety, calling for reasonable and rational gun safety legislation in the United States.
Dr. Crossman and more than 300 other college and university presidents from more than 40 states have signed a letter that is being personally delivered to U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden this week. The vice president is leading a task force expected to deliver recommendations shortly to President Barack Obama on curbing gun violence, in the wake of last month’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
College Presidents for Gun Safety calls on policymakers to approve measures that include:
- Ensuring the safety of communities by opposing legislation allowing guns on campuses and in classrooms.
- Ending the gun show loophole that allows for the purchase of guns from unlicensed sellers without a criminal background check.
- Reinstating the ban on military-style semi-automatic assault weapons, along with high-capacity ammunition magazines.
- Requiring consumer safety standards for all guns, such as safety locks, access prevention laws, and regulations to identify, prevent, and correct manufacturing defects.
“Identification and treatment of the mental health issues that lie beneath so many of the mass murders to which we increasingly bear witness must also be addressed,” the letter also states.
