    The Institute on Social Exclusion (ISE) Social Exclusion Simulation (SES) is a powerful role-play exercise that allows participants to see more clearly the ways in which society’s systemic and structural barriers produce social exclusion for certain groups of people. The SES simulates social exclusion processes by replicating the experiences of formerly incarcerated women attempting to re-enter society following their release from prison.

    Participants include students, faculty and staff of the Adler School, members of the greater Chicagoland community, anyone interested in learning more about social exclusion. Participants adopt authentic Chicago-based case histories of formerly incarcerated women and are tasked with re-entering society – finding a place to live, a job, healthcare and other necessities – in the face of structural and systemic barriers.

    The SES is important because it helps participants understand the limits of personal responsibility and the critical role for social change initiatives.

    Participant outcomes include:

    • An increased understanding of what structural and systemic barriers are and how they work to undermine opportunity and access.
    • Increased appreciation of practical limits of personal responsibility, agency, and choice.
    • Increased motivation to adopt attitudinal and behavioral changes in pursuit of social change.
    • Increased empathy for other marginalized groups.
    • Apprehend the shock and disappointment about roadblocks of re-entry.

  • The Best Networkers Get the Job (+)

    More than half of psychologists are independent practitioners, according to the American Psychological Association.  Are you an entrepreneur? What might a career look like if you combined several areas of work?  Teaching, consulting with nonprofits and corporations, coaching, conducting forensic assessments, substance abuse evaluations and psychological evaluations for obesity and other treatment programs, etc.

    At this interactive workshop, participants will connect with one another, examine where and how to look for opportunities as well as how to create and sustain an active, expanding professional community. the workshop will be presented by CTC coach, Robert Gramillano who has experience as an executive coach, consultant, workshop leader and more.

    The Adler School Alumni Board is pleased to sponsor professional development workshops to offset costs associated with this valuable resource.  For alumni, registration is $10, which covers the workshop and includes a $5 gift to the Adler School Scholarship Fund. For current Adler School students, registration is free but registration must be completed in advance.

  • Global Perspectives on Career Paths for Psychologists (+)

    Dr. Chris Stout will be discussing career paths and local opportunities for psychology-grounded students, alumni, and faculty from a global perspective. He will discuss models that psychologists have used at the United Nations to the use of psychological principles in policy development and sustainability. He will also share real-world stories from innovative non-profits that are meant to open new perspectives, ideas and approaches that attendees may learn from and adapt to their interests and professional endeavors. Dr. Stout will conclude with a number of tools and resources that will be made available to attendees and be available for questions and discussion.
