New research shows that brain scans of at-risk children may identify signs of learning disability as early as age 4 before problems emerge. Commenting on the study published this week, Douglas Whiteside, Ph.D., ABPP/CN, Neuropsychology Coordinator and Core Faculty with the Adler School Department of Clinical Psychology, notes that normal brains often show variability in their activation patterns—variability that does not always translate to a learning disability or a problem. Dr. Whiteside is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist who has practiced clinically for the past 16 years, with particular experience in learning disabilities in children and adults.
