“The urban environment has a profound impact on psychological functioning.” So explains Lynn Todman, Ph.D., an urban planner and Executive Director of the Adler School Institute on Social Exclusion, in the lead story of a public radio series that is examining the issues raised by abandoned housing in the Midwest.
The series began airing Nov. 2 as part of the “Changing Gears” collaboration among National Public Radio affiliates WBEZ 91.5 in Chicago, Michigan Radio and 90.3 WCPN ideastream of Ohio to explore the economic transformation of the industrial Midwest. In the lead story, Dr. Todman describes the mental health impact that abandoned housing has on a community, based on the Mental Health Impact Assessment (MHIA) she and the ISE led in Chicago’s Englewood community in fall 2010.
